About Our Skin Care Experts
Joanna Nicholson, P.A.- C
Joanna completed her training as a Physician Assistant at the University of Southern California in 2001. She received the Ethel Gardner P.E.O. Scholarship Award and was on the Dean's List during both the didactic and clinical phase of training. Joanna received her Bachelor's Degree in Science from San Diego State University where she majored in Exercise Science and Biology and received her Athletic Training Certificate.
Prior to joining Dr. Alexander, Joanna practiced general dermatology and performed a variety of laser treatments. Joanna has extensive experience performing BOTOX® Cosmetic, Restylane™ treatments, FotoFacial™, laser hair removal, and sclerotherapy (spider vein removal treatment).
She is a member of the American Association of Physician Assistants, the California Academy of Physician Assistants, and the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants
LeAnne Howard
LeAnn completed her training as an aesthetician at Je Boutique in San Diego. She has completed several specialty courses in acne, acne scarring, photo damage, and various peels. She was also the West Coast educator for a cosmeceutical skin care line from New York for two years. LeAnne has over 17 years experience working closely with plastic surgerons and dermatologists in the field of medical esthetics.
FotoFacial™ – Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatment
Available at our San Diego practice, IPL FotoFacial™ is the most advanced non-invasive skin rejuvenation option available today. How Does IPL FotoFacial™ Work?
The secret to FotoFacial™ is the use of intense pulsed light (IPL), which passes through the skin to eliminate unwanted skin pigments and structures, and stimulate the body’s own natural rejuvenative mechanisms such as collagen and elastin production.

Chemical Peel Treatments
At our San Diego practice, the chemical peel solutions we use for treatments are custom blended by our aesthetician during your visit specifically for your skin type. Undergoing a chemical peel can drastically improve the appearance of the skin by unclogging and refining pores, reducing hyperpigmentation (dark spots), diminishing fine lines, and removing dry, dead, or sun damaged skin cells.
BioMedic® Micro Peel®
The three step BioMedic® Micro Peel® offered at our San Diego practice is a safe, effective chemical peel. Patients can choose between two different strengths of glycolic peel solution – twenty and thirty percent - depending on the level of rejuvenation they desire.
The peel begins with dermaplaning, an effective exfoliation technique, or an enzyme mask to remove a thin layer of dead skin cells. Next, the peel solution is applied to the face until the appropriate level of exfoliation is achieved to refine and clear skin pores. Finally, the skin undergoes cryogenic therapy, in which cold carbon dioxide mist is applied in circular motions to relieve any redness and inflammation. Although there is usually no downtime with the Micro Peel®, mild peeling and flaking of the skin may occur up to a few days after treatment.
Custom Enhance Peel
The custom enhance peel is a chemical peel specifically formulated to suit your individual skin type. Our experienced aesthetician will perform a full evaluation of your skin and apply customized peel solution to achieve the best possible results. Post-peel healing time varies depending upon the strength and duration of the treatment.
Cosmelan Peel
This is a comprehensive mask for the treatment of stubborn pigmentation of melasma. This peel requires 48 hours of downtime.

Acne Treatments

Cleansing Acne Treatment

Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive treatment offered at out San Diego practice to renew the skin and give it a more refreshed and refined appearance. Unlike some peels and laser resurfacing treatments, microdermabrasion uses no acids, will not break the skin, and requires no recovery time. The specialized microdermabrasion wand sprays a concentrated mist of tiny polishing micro-spheres across the surface of the skin, removing dead, flaking cells, refining and unclogging pores, fading age spots, and reducing the appearance of fine lines. There is absolutely no discomfort experienced during the procedure, and the results achieved on all different types of skin, from dry and aging to oily and acne-prone, are remarkable.
Laser Skin Resurfacing
There are many types of laser skin resurfacing options available for the rejuvenation of the facial skin. Laser resurfacing can dramatically improve the skin’s texture, as well as the appearance of wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and scars. The laser can specifically target and remove skin at varying depths to reveal fresh new skin below the surface. Depending on the desired outcome of the resurfacing treatment, patients may choose to have only specific areas of the face, such as deep creases or scars, targeted with the laser, or choose to undergo a comprehensive rejuvenative treatment that refines the entire surface of the face. Recovery time after laser skin resurfacing varies according to the depth and intensity of the treatment received. Usually, a moderate amount of healing time is required for the skin to be free of flaking, redness, and tenderness.
